Steve Rosendale’s ‘The Diving Pool’ is an image of nostalgia. It is set in an imagined motel, perhaps from a 1960s television show, Hotel California or faded postcard, skirted by idealized figures. Rosendale is less interested in witness reports than the opiate power of collective memory itself.

‘The Diving Pool’ occurs in a universe that never existed and yet it is somehow familiar, a summer from some past life that we unthinkingly yearn for. What is nostalgia amputated from experience? As writer Carson McCullers observed, “we are most homesick for places we’ve never been”.
