Compatibility with parent armor

The Armored Republic Trauma Pad is compatible with body armor from Armored Republic and most other armor systems and plate carriers. The six available sizes — 6x6, 8x10, 9x9, 10x12, 11x14, and 11x15 inches — cover the standard plate and panel dimensions used across the majority of contemporary plate carriers, including cummerbund pockets sized for 6x6 and 6x8 side plates.

The pad sits behind the armor plate or soft panel, between the plate and the wearer's body. It does not replace soft armor and does not contribute ballistic protection in any configuration.

Function

When a bullet strikes body armor, the energy from the impact transfers to the armor and, to a measurable degree, to the wearer. The nature of that transfer depends on the armor type: soft armor flexes to catch the projectile; steel alloy shatters it; ceramic dissipates the force by breaking apart; polyethylene captures the bullet by melting around it. All these mechanisms produce some level of backface deformation — inward deflection of the armor surface — and that deformation translates directly into blunt force trauma.

Each trauma pad is engineered to mitigate that blunt force. The non-Newtonian pad material damps the pressure spike pinpointed by a stopped ballistic threat, reducing felt energy through the plate and the BFD that could otherwise cause injury after impact. Trauma pads work more effectively at mitigating backface deformation forces than soft armor used as a backing material behind a hard rifle plate.

Trauma pads are non-ballistic and provide no increase in ballistic protection. They do not affect the armor's rated threat level.

Some plate carriers lack built-in pocket padding. The trauma pad provides a secondary benefit in those setups: a layer of comfort during extended wear, donning, and doffing, in addition to its primary BFD-reduction function.
