Description:
A compilation album of piano sonatas and sonatinas by Ferdinand Ries, a pupil and friend of Beethoven. Ferdinand Ries was praised by Robert Schumann in 1835 in the "New Musical Times" for his "remarkable originality. Now, 250 years after Beethoven's birth, he is attracting even more attention as one of the legators of piano music linking Beethoven and Chopin. This 6-CD box set includes works from his early years, which show the influence of Haydn, Mozart, and other classical composers, to his later works, which are reminiscent of Mendelssohn and Schumann. It conveys music reflecting the era of the "piano sonata" genre from its heyday to its twilight. (C)RS
