Description:
Based in Leipzig, Julius Klengel has been the principal cellist of the Gewandhaus Orchestra for many years. Raised in a musical family, his great-grandfather was a church cantor and his grandfather a violinist, his brother Paul is also known for his achievements as a violinist, composer, and arranger. He was also an excellent teacher, and among his pupils are not only such renowned cellists as Feuermann and Piatigorsky, but also Honegger and Hideo Saito, who also showed great promise in their own right. All of the concertinos on this album were written for church performances, and the piano is used for accompaniment, and each piece requires a piano with a variety of sounds and expressive power that rivals that of an orchestra. The cello is played by Martin Rummel, one of the most famous cellists in Vienna, and the piano accompaniment is provided by Mari Kato, a native of Obihiro. The thrilling performance is a must-see.
