Leo Weinel (1885-1960) was a Hungarian-born composer of Jewish descent. As an educator, he trained many musicians, and his students included such renowned names as Dorati, Kurtág, and Anda. His masterpiece, "Csongol and Tunde," a piece for a play by Hungarian national poet Mihály Berezmáti, was scheduled to be performed at the Hungarian National Theater, but was postponed due to the size of the orchestra, etc. The first performance of the scherzo was in 1914, and the entire piece was finally premiered in 1916. The work includes a scherzo by Weinel. Recorded in Budapest in 2015. (C)RS
