The Armored Republic A1 is a curved, Shooters Cut steel alloy body armor plate rated at Level III+. It stops 5.56x45 M855 rounds at up to 3,100 fps and all lesser threats with multi-hit capability, making it one of the more capable steel plates in this price range. Available in 10"x12", 11"x14", and 9"x9" sizes, with a choice of FragLock Base Coat or Build-Up Coat. Each plate weighs 8 lbs (10"x12", Base Coat) at 0.31" thick.
The A1 is built from a custom steel alloy blend and carries a Level III+ Special Threat Rating. It defeats 5.56x45 M855 penetrators at up to 3,100 fps, 5.56x45 M193 at up to 3,100 fps, 7.62x39 at up to 3,000 fps, .308 WIN at up to 3,000 fps, and 7.62x51 — along with all lesser threats — with multi-hit capability across each threat class.
Standard NIJ Level III protection covers six shots of 7.62x51mm at 2,780 fps. The A1 extends that baseline to include M855 and M193 penetrators and higher-velocity 7.62x39 threats. Unlike ceramic or polyethylene alternatives, the steel alloy construction allows the plate to absorb several hits from these rounds without structural failure.
The A1 ships in a single-curve, Shooters Cut profile. The 10"x12" size fits the front and rear plate bags of the majority of plate carriers designed for standard-format plates. The 11"x14" option suits larger carriers or users who prefer extended torso coverage. The 9"x9" option works in side-plate bags and smaller supplemental positions. Confirm your carrier's plate bag dimensions before ordering, or contact us to verify fit.
Every A1 plate ships with FragLock coating in one of two variants. The Base Coat seals the steel surface against sweat and moisture, delivering a maintenance-free 20-year shelf life. The Build-Up Coat adds a thicker elastomeric layer that prevents fragmentation — spall and jacket fragments that a bare steel plate can redirect toward exposed limbs and the face — from separating off the plate face on impact. For any application where fragmentation injury is a real concern, the Build-Up Coat is the stronger choice.
The 20-year shelf life applies under proper storage: keep the plate clean and dry, store at room temperature away from direct sunlight, and inspect regularly for wear.
At 10"x12" and 0.31" thick in Shooters Cut, the A1 fits any plate carrier with a standard 10"x12" plate bag. The 11"x14" variant requires a carrier with a large-format front bag. The 9"x9" variant is sized for side-plate pouches. Single-curve geometry is compatible with the full range of flat and curved plate pockets — no carrier modifications needed. Contact us if you need to confirm compatibility with a specific carrier model.
NIJ Level III requires a plate to stop six shots of 7.62x51mm at 2,780 fps. Level III+ is a Special Threat Rating — not an official NIJ designation — applied to plates that go further. The A1 also stops 5.56x45 M855 and M193 at 3,100 fps, 7.62x39 at 3,000 fps, and .308 WIN at 3,000 fps, threats a standard Level III plate is not required to defeat.
The A1 defeats 5.56x45 M855 and M193 penetrators at up to 3,100 fps, 7.62x39 at up to 3,000 fps, .308 WIN at up to 3,000 fps, and 7.62x51 — plus all lesser handgun and rifle threats — with multi-hit capability. It does not cover Level IV armor-piercing rounds such as 30-06 M2 AP.
When a bullet strikes a bare steel plate, jacket fragments and spall can redirect toward your face, neck, and limbs. The FragLock Build-Up Coat encapsulates the plate face in a thick elastomeric layer that traps those fragments on impact. The Base Coat seals the steel against moisture but does not provide the same fragmentation mitigation. For most defensive applications, the Build-Up Coat is the recommended choice.
Each 10"x12" A1 plate weighs 8 lbs, so a standard front-and-rear configuration adds 16 lbs of plate weight before factoring in the carrier. That is heavier than a comparable ceramic or UHMWPE plate setup. If total system weight is a priority, consider whether the multi-hit steel advantage justifies that trade-off for your use case.
The A1 carries a 20-year shelf life with FragLock coating applied. Store the plate clean and dry, at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Inspect periodically for signs of wear or coating damage. The steel alloy construction means the plate does not degrade the way polyethylene or ceramic plates can under poor storage conditions.
The A1 cannot be shipped to New York or Connecticut — both states restrict body armor ownership to law enforcement and active military. Under 18 U.S.C. § 931, anyone with a federal felony conviction for a crime of violence is prohibited from purchasing or possessing body armor.
