Description:
The Elbphilharmonie, a new concert hall in Hamburg, will be inaugurated in January 2017. The NDR Elbphilharmonie has changed its name to the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in the 2016/17 season, and the orchestra is now even more active. Thomas Hengelbrock, who has been the chief conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie since 2011, has created a sensation in the German music world with his excellent performances of Brahms's complete symphonies. The first recording session was held at the Elbphilharmonie prior to its official opening. Hamburg is the birthplace of Brahms, and the NDR Elbphilharmonie, founded in 1945 as the Northwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra, continues the tradition of performing Brahms. Hengelbrock has also built on this tradition, bringing his unique period style to Brahms playing with an innovative approach. In May 2016, he held a "Brahms Marathon" at the Hamburg International Music Festival, performing four symphonies in a single evening, which attracted a great deal of attention.■Blu-spec CD2/ Year of recording: November 2016 / Location: Erb Philharmonie Hamburg
