Description:
Siblet, the daughter of a farmer in the suburbs of Paris, goes to the Paris market every morning to sell vegetables. She is looking for someone to marry when she turns 21, and to her surprise, she is engaged to eight men. However, she cannot feel true love for any of them. One day, she asks a fortune teller at the market to look at her palm, only to get the inexplicable answer, "You will be happy when you are handed a strange letter. The market manager Duparquet arrives with Antonin, a wealthy viscount who has just been dumped the night before by Xenoby, a high-class prostitute. How will Sibrette find the love of her life? The comic opera "Sybrette" by Reinaldo Arn, a close friend of the writer Proust and a well-known songwriter, premiered to great acclaim at the Théâtre Valièté in Paris on April 7, 1923. The story of Sibrette, a market vegetable vendor, who is guided to happiness by a fortune teller's three prophecies, is set against the backdrop of a Parisian market, a nearby farm village, a theater, and the social scene, all told with a light touch. In this production, the comical and sophisticated direction by Michel Pho, who is also an accomplished comedian, creates an atmospheric portrayal of the nostalgic feelings of the Belle Époque era that abound in this production. The singers give witty singing performances, especially the beautiful voice of Julie Hooks in the title role, which is perfectly suited to the role. The supple and nimble performance by Aksantus, conducted by Christophe Grablon, also adds to the work. This release is a new edition of the disc released by FRA Musica in 2014 with Japanese subtitles. Naxos Japan
