Beethoven (1770-1827)
Description:
Frieder Bernius is one of the leading conductors in the German choral world, and together with the Stuttgart Chamber Choir, which he founded in 1968, he has earned an international reputation for his performances of choral works from various periods and styles. This time, the video recording of "Solemn Mass," Beethoven's greatest work, was made in a session at the church attached to the Alpirsbach Abbey. The video will allow the audience to witness the meticulous and daring approach to the expressive power and universality of this work, which transcends the boundaries of church music. In the documentary, Bernius, who has worked for more than half a century on large-scale religious works by Monteverdi, Schütz, Bach, and Mendelssohn, is shown taking up the challenge of this large-scale work anew. He researched the work again before recording it, and passionately communicated his findings to the performers, who finished the performance as if embodying Beethoven's motto in the score: "From the heart out, to the heart back in again.
