Romanian-born Commissina (June 16, 1928 - March 5, 2005) made his American debut in 1965 conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra, and in 1969 he became the Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, transforming it from a regional orchestra to one of America's leading orchestras, In 1969, he became the Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, where he built it from a regional orchestra to one of the best in the United States. In Japan, he is known for his numerous guest conducting engagements with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras. The two symphonies by Mendelssohn in this program were rated as the best of the two symphonies in the American Record Guide published in 1988, for their neat expression with a natural approach.
