Description:

This is the first album in six years from Swiss pianist Nick Bertsch's band Ronin, and their fourth original album for ECM. The title of the album is "合わせ," a martial arts term meaning "to move together," as in aikido, a perfect metaphor for Ronin's unique dynamic and precision, mosaic-style groove, and balletic minimalism. Previously a quintet, now a quartet, and newly joined by Thomy Jordi on bass, the new Ronin is a new look Ronin. Bertu describes his newfound freedom and flexibility as "more transparency, more interaction, more joy in every performance. The work is also freer in its song selection, including reworking an early Bertu module and tackling a lead Sha original for the first time.
