Marteau, Henri (1874-1934)
Description:
The second collection of Henri Marteau's string quartets by the Isasi Quartet, following the first collection (555128), String Quartet No. 1, published in 1904, is an ambitious work by Marteau in which he explored his own style while continuing the German and French Romantic tradition. The first and second movements are played seamlessly, with a solemn introduction in the third movement. It is a beautiful piece, but has rarely been performed. The Clarinet Quintet, which opens with a brooding clarinet solo, is a piece with a subdued atmosphere that shows the influence of Brahms. The third movement, with its pastoral atmosphere, is particularly impressive. Belgian clarinetist Jean-Michel Charlier joins Marteau in this piece to express his view of the world. Naxos Japan
