Description:
Asheville, North Carolina band Wednesday, led by Carly Hertzman, has completed its long-awaited new album. Rat Saw God, a Half Funny, Half Tragic Message Between Shoegaze and Country, Released on Dead OceansWednesday will release its highly anticipated new album, Rat Saw God, on April 7 on Dead Oceans The half-funny, half-tragic message from North Carolina, which plays out somewhere between '90s shoegaze and classic country twang, is cut through the din by distorted pedal steel and Karly Hartzman's voice. Late last year, the band released the single "Bull Believer" from the album; Pitchfork named it one of the Best New Tracks and Best Songs of 2022, calling it "their most ambitious song to date." Additionally, Stereogum and Uproxx named "Rat Saw God" as one of the most anticipated albums of 2023; Wednesday's song is a quilt; and the band's "Bull Believer" was named one of the best songs of 2023 by Pitchfork, which called it "the most ambitious song they've ever done.Somehow the disparate moments make sense as a whole. Songwriter/vocalist/guitarist Karly Hartzman, who leads the project, is both a storyteller and a collector of stories. Rat Saw God, the Asheville quintet's newest and greatest work, is at once epic, autobiographical, and above all, deeply empathetic. Rat Saw God was written in the months immediately following the completion of their last album, Twin Plagues, and recorded over the course of a week at the Drop of Sun studio in Asheville. The songs on the album are not epic tales, but songs about everyday life, which is consistent with Hartzman's own ethos. "Literally every life story is worth writing down," she says. Because people are so fascinating," she says. Karly Hartzman, who writes most of her songs from her bedroom in Asheville, North Carolina, started playing guitar after seeing Mitski's NPR "Tiny Desk. She attended college in Asheville and released an album, Yep Definitely, under the name Wednesday. The band then officially gathered its band members and released its second album, "I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone," in 2020 and its third album, "Twin Plagues," in 2021. The members of Wednesday are Hartzman, MJ Lenderman, Margo Shultz, Alan Miller, Xandy Chellleman, Alan Miller, Margo Shultz, Margo Shultz, and Xandy Chelleman. Miller, and Xandy Chelmis, the band honors country lyricism. The sound is reminiscent of alternative rock, shoegaze, and country.
