The New York Public Library recently unearthed the complete, previously unreleased recordings of one of the most charismatic saxophonists in jazz history, John Coltrane, performing live at the Village Gate jazz club in New York City in August 1961, In the summer of 1961, John Coltrane appeared for a month at the Village Gate with a quintet featuring McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, Elvin Jones, and Eric Dolphy. This rare recording was made by engineer Rich Alderson in 1961 as part of a test of a new sound system. In addition to Coltrane's signature repertoire of "My Favorite Things," "Impressions," and "Greensleeves," the recording includes "When Lights Are Low," featuring Eric Dolphy's bass clarinet, and the first-ever live recording of Coltrane's "Africa. The five songs are "Africa" composed by Coltrane, which is the first live recording of this piece.The CD booklet for the album includes insightful essays contributed by bassist Reggie Workman and recording engineer Rich Alderson, who were at the show, as well as music historian Ashley Kahn and saxophonists Branford Marsalis and Lakeshia Benjamin.
