It also charted at #37 with the single "Black Friday."The album is characterized by Becker and Fagen's initial dissatisfaction with the album's sound quality due to a problem with the then state-of-the-art DBX noise reduction system. working with the DBX engineers to improve the sound quality, the album was ultimately a success, but Fagen and Becker refused to hear the finished version. Fagen and Becker refused to listen to the finished version. This album was also the first Steely Dan album to feature singer Michael McDonald. Known for his soulful voice as a member of the Doobie Brothers, McDonald has won five Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 as a member of the Doobie Brothers. The album cover features a photograph of a grasshopper, a "singing" (STRIDULATING) insect related to crickets and grasshoppers. This is a reference to the album title, and the "singing" of the grasshopper sounds as if it is saying, "Katy did, Katy did not. The lyrics of the song "Dr. Woo" include phrases such as "Katie tried, I'm half glued, Katie lies, I can see it in her eyes."The premise of Katy's "lying" theme is based on what Denny Diaz said when he came into the studio to play on "Your Gold Teeth II. Jeff Porcaro, who was only 21 at the time, played drums on all the songs except "Any World (That I'm Welcome To)," which featured legendary session drummer Hal Blaine.
