Spectrum is the debut solo album by jazz fusion drummer Billy Cobham, released in 1973 on Atlantic Records. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York, the sessions featured guitarist Tommy Bolin, keyboardist Jan Hammer, and bassist Leland Sklar, and were completed in just two days. Most tracks were captured in one or two takes, giving the album its spontaneous, live feel.
Blending jazz improvisation with rock and funk energy, Spectrum became a landmark of 1970s fusion. Bolin’s fiery guitar work on “Quadrant 4” and “Taurian Matador,” Hammer’s fluid synthesizer lines, and Cobham’s explosive drumming defined its sound. The album’s standout track, “Stratus,” gained renewed recognition decades later as the main sample in Massive Attack’s Safe from Harm and for its inclusion in Grand Theft Auto IV.
Though early reviews were mixed, Spectrum has since been recognized as one of the defining jazz fusion records of its era. AllMusic’s Scott Yanow later called it “an exceptional fusion album” and Cobham’s best, while Leland Sklar described it as “new ground… flying by the seat of your pants.”
