A collection of Toshio Hosokawa's flute works by Japan's top flutist, Yue Ueno! Toshio Hosokawa (1955-), who studied composition in Germany under Yun Isao, Brian Ferneyhough, and Klaus Huber, is one of the leading contemporary Japanese composers with works based on traditional Japanese culture and music and their aesthetic and spiritual foundations. Hosokawa praised Yue Ueno's flute for its "perfect technique and rich, delicate musicality," and for its "heavenly echoes that transcend the sounds of human and earthly instruments," and here is an ideal album featuring such masterpieces as "Line I" and "Farewell to the Birds III. Line I" (1984), the origin of the idea of "calligraphy of sound," in which lines drawn with a brush are expressed with sound, is an important work that became the starting point for Hosokawa's subsequent compositional activities. The piece was composed as a celebration of Toru Takemitsu's 60th birthday.
