About the Photoshoot

"The Gates to Highlands" was a product of patience, luck, and a touch of Icelandic magic. On this helicopter journey over Iceland’s central Highlands, I was eager to capture the vibrant green moss that thrives in this otherwise inhospitable world of black sand deserts, ominous clouds, and jagged peaks. This remote region is where the raw beauty of Iceland truly reveals itself—a place where nature is untamed, and the landscapes seem to belong to another world.

As we flew over the rugged terrain, I focused on the stark contrasts in the landscape: the dark volcanic sands, the sharp mountain ridges, and the patches of moss that seemed to glow under the intermittent sunlight. My goal was to capture these elements in harmony, but little did I know that nature had an extraordinary gift waiting for me.

Rainbows, in Icelandic culture, are steeped in mythology, often symbolizing a bridge between our world and the realm of the gods, according to Norse legends. For photographers, they are a rare and unpredictable phenomenon, especially in Iceland where the weather can shift dramatically within moments. When the rainbow appeared in my frame, arching gracefully over the Storasula mountain, it was as if the landscape had come alive, offering a fleeting glimpse of something truly divine.

The composition was complete. The rainbow added a vibrant splash of color and a sense of mysticism to the scene, framing the cone-shaped Storasula like a gateway to another world. In that moment, I could understand how the first Icelanders might have seen rainbows as a bridge to the heavens, while to me, it felt like a mystical gate guarding the entrance to the Highlands.

About Storasula and the Central Highlands

Storasula, the striking cone-shaped mountain featured in "The Gates to Highlands," is located in the central Highlands of Iceland, a region renowned for its otherworldly landscapes. This area is part of the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, which is accessible only during the short Icelandic summer when the roads are passable. The region's remoteness and rugged terrain make it a haven for adventurers and photographers alike.

Storasula stands out against the surrounding black sand deserts and volcanic landscapes, its green mossy slopes providing a stark contrast to the dark, barren surroundings. The mountain, along with the nearby glaciers and rivers, creates a dramatic backdrop that showcases the raw and untamed beauty of Iceland's Highlands.
