Dapol N Blue Spot Fish Van E87582
Until relatively recently, before the advent of frozen road transport vehicles, the railroad was the preferred mode of transport for fish. With the ability to quickly move fish over long distances, the town of Grismby has become the largest fishing port in the world. After nationalization, British Rail used an LNER design in which the fish was packed in ice and then transported in a specially insulated trolley as the new standard design for the fish van. Several hundred wagons were built by the Faverdale Wagon Works near Darlington between 1954 and 1961, and as fish vans were usually painted white with a blue dot. The cars were used in units of 10 to 20 cars and were pulled by the fastest express locomotives of their time.
