Description:
The legendary trio's live recording from '72 at the NDR Funkhaus in Hamburg is finally available for the first time. Remixed by M. Eicher and J. E. Kongshaug from the original tape. This is the last super strong disc of 2014, which was decided to be released on short notice. In the late 60's and early 70's when Keith Jarrett was playing with Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and Charles Lloyd Quartet, Keith Jarrett was working with Charlie Haden and Paul Motian, a trio he first formed in 1966 as a leader. Keith Jarrett was working with Charlie Haden and Paul Motian, a trio he had first formed in 1966 as a leader. This was Keith Jarrett's first and later legendary trio, and he chose the right people! With Hayden on bass, who had honed his craft in Ornette Coleman's band, and Motian, who had been in Bill Evans' innovative trio on drums, Jarrett could explore all aspects of modern jazz, from poetic ballads to hard swing and even ferocious, fiery free jazz. poetic ballads to hard swing and even fiery free jazz, sometimes improvising until Jarrett was playing soprano saxophone or flute! The interplay between these three true musicians is extraordinary throughout the album, but it culminates with the Hayden classic "Song for Che" (the only Jarrett recording of what has become a new jazz classic)! Just listening to the beautiful piano phrase at the beginning of M-1, you get the feeling that something great is about to happen. In July 2014, 42 years after the trio's '72 tour (the trio's first European tour, hosted by ECM), Manfred Eicher and Jan-Erik Kongshaug remixed the original live tapes of a German radio concert in Oslo, Germany. The remix was done in Oslo the day after the news of Hayden's death, as if by design. Hayden's presence is palpable on this album, as he stands firmly at the center of the track and plays a powerful bass guitar. I think a lot of the great music that came out of that era came from this group. Keith was always very consistent and had a lot of original ideas as a leader, but he also wrote songs for us. I couldn't get enough of that. He would always bring new songs to rehearsals and soundchecks. We would play through the new songs at soundcheck, and I couldn't wait to play them that night. I can already feel the songs being 'me' before we play them. Hayden told Ethan Iverson a few years ago.
