This is the only recording Gatti made with the prestigious Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, which was responsible for the world premiere and Italian premiere of Respighi's Roman Trilogy, when he was its music director. The recording is unique in that it is not merely a showy orchestral showpiece, but rather focuses more on musical expression than on the depiction of scenes. Gatti's precise and tightly controlled Italian orchestra is not short of brilliant sound, but the delicate sound of the impressionistic lyrical passages in particular and the skillfully blended tonal changes express the essential charm of Respighi's music with extreme clarity.
