Flamestone was Quistgard's first tableware, which he designed for Dansk Designs in 1957. The series was first produced by Eslau Keramik and was an unexpectedly great success. The factory could not keep up with the high demand, and so Richard Nissen, who had previously worked as a manufacturer of wooden products for Dansk Designs and had taken over the Kronjyden ceramic factory in 1953, took over production from Eslau Keramik. To compensate for Flamestone's initial short production period, Quistgaard drew the Relief series to compensate for Kronjyden. Flamestone consists of a matt dark brown clay mass that, after two kiln fires, takes on a brown-black hue and achieves fire resistance. The surface feels rough and the texture of the clay emphasizes the grooves on the edges. Inside, the flamestone elements are glazed white.
