The haemocytometer is intended for counting cells under the microscope. It is used, for example, to quantify leucocytes or erythrocytes or to determine the cell count in cerebrospinal fluid. In addition, microorganisms can also be quantified with the help of the haemocytometer.
The base plate of the chamber has similar dimensions to a microscope slide, which facilitates handling during cell counting. In the centre of the chamber is a large group square that is subdivided into further squares and areas depending on the haemocytometer system. For cell counting, a certain number of group squares is counted. The dilution of the sample must be chosen so that there is no more than one cell per small square.
The haemocytometer system is available either as Fuchs-Rosenthal, Bürker, Thoma haemocytometer system or Neubauer haemocytometer system.
