36-Inch Steel Alloy Gong, Handcrafted in China

This is a large-format gong, in stainless alloy, one of one. It was a prototype for now in production line of Ohm Store Chinese Made Gongs. 

You see a wide, mirror-polished center plate surrounded by a hand-hammered dimple field worked across the full playing zone.

The plate is formed from 304-grade stainless alloy, approximately 74% iron, 18% chromium, and 8% nickel, shaped through pressing, spinning, and mechanical surface work that introduces compressive stress into the hammered zone. 

Sound

Struck, this instrument leads with a 57 Hz fundamental, which is a sub-bass body. Above that sits a dense low cluster at 68 Hz and 106 Hz, and a mid-partial spread reaching through D#4, F#4, and G#4 up to D5. 

Played with a friction mallet, the instrument shows a different side. The friction couples to a sustained singing voice centered around 300 to 415 Hz — D4 through G#4 — while the 57 Hz body persists underneath.

One of a Kind

There is one of these. The stainless alloy gong is a category still in active development, and this instrument represents the maker's first full iteration at 36 inches.
