Pretty vintage silver and marcasite bow brooch with the original safety chain. 

Traditionally seen as a symbol of love and marriage, bows in jewellery first appeared in 17th century France. The placement of bow jewels during this period was highly symbolic. A bow worn on a ribbon around the neck suggested playfulness, whilst a bow worn near to the heart suggested the wearer was in love. During the French Revolution the frivolity of the bow on jewellery disappeared but reappeared during the Edwardian era and started to feature on brooches, rings, necklaces and earrings. The bow motif endures today often playing a prominent part in luxury jewellery houses such as Chanel. Tiffany and Garrard.

Brooches are now having a massive resurgence and can add individuality to your outfit. Pin them on your favourite denim jacket, shirt or sweater to instantly elevate your style.

The brooch measures 3.5cm.

It has no hallmarks but I have acid tested it for low grade silver.

This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. This gorgeous brooch is in excellent vintage condition.
