Theme: What is the Bible all about? 

At the beginning of His ministry, Jesus said that He came to fulfill all of what we call the Old Testament. This isn’t just about the completion of some predictive prophecies. It’s about accomplishing every purpose and realizing every blessing found in the Old Testament. And after He rose from the grave, Jesus said that He had succeeded in doing so. More shockingly, Jesus claimed Himself to be the central and primary subject of the whole Old Testament. He taught the disciples that the Law, Prophets, & Psalms were all about Him. To anyone who has read much of the Bible, this doesn’t sound quite right. But when we begin to understand the Old Testament through the lens of Jesus, it all starts to make sense.

ELEMENTARY LESSONS OVERVIEW:

Lesson 1: The Prophets Prove that Jesus is God’s Messiah

Synopsis: The Old Testament has over 300 prophecies about Jesus that were written hundreds of years before He was born. Isaiah lived about 700 years before Jesus, and Isaiah 53 says some remarkably accurate things that Jesus fulfilled. We will look at a sampling of Isaiah's predictions, and talk about how they were fulfilled in the life and death of Jesus.

Lesson 2: Jesus came to fulfill the Law & the Prophets.

Synopsis: We usually think of a prophecy as a prediction & fulfillment happens when that prediction comes true. But these words are about much more than predicting future events. Biblical prophecy is all about preaching and teaching. In fact, most of the words of the Bible’s prophets are not predicting anything. Fulfillment isn’t just about seeing a prediction come true. To fulfill something is to bring it to completion by meeting its requirements. And that is exactly how Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament.
Scripture: Matthew 5:17-18, 1 Corinthians 6:19, Hebrews 10:14, Judges 13-16

Lesson 3: Jesus said that the entire Bible is about Him.

Synopsis: On the road to Emmaus, the Risen Jesus met two disciples who did not recognize Him. Here, Jesus makes an incredible claim. He says that the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms are all about one subject… Him. Jesus claims to be the main subject, the central figure, and the entire point of the Old Testament, the whole enchilada. Then Jesus explains it all to them. The bad news is that Luke didn’t write down what Jesus explained to them. The good news is that other New Testament writers explained how Jesus fulfilled every word.

Lesson 4: We find Jesus in the Old Testament when we look for Him there.

Synopsis: How can the entire Old Testament be about Jesus? The amazing truth is that we will find Him there if we look for Him. In this lesson, we will look at how in Hebrews 11 & 12, the writer talks about the greatness of all of the Old Testament’s heroes, for the purpose of pointing out that they all fail in comparison to Jesus; the perfecter of our faith. The author of Hebrews looked at the stories of these heroes and saw flawed, imperfect people who needed Jesus.
