Butler James (known from the game The VOC Treasure) has sent you a stack of notes. As you study them you start to see certain patterns. What do they mean and how did James come into possession of these mysterious notes? The story goes that centuries ago a teenager named Jan Kleyne (Little John) had to fear for his life. As an Alchemy student, he had been very on his guard lately. Every time a fellow student shared an invention with their master Alchemist, that student disappeared without a trace.

One stormy evening, Jan was collecting firewood behind the shed when he saw the Alchemist emerging from the forest with a shovel, completely soaked. Hiding behind a pile of wood, Jan waited until he was alone again. He had a bad feeling but still he couldn't control his curiosity so he sneaked into the forest. A good distance into the dark forest he suddenly saw what looked like a freshly dug grave...

Jan decided to encode all his findings and incorporate them into his notes using puzzles. He told the alchemist that he was still not making progress with his project, but deep down Jan knew that he was close, very close to a great invention. No one knows what happened to Jan, but years ago the famous treasure hunter Bram van Amstel discovered the notes. Since Bram van Amstel's death, his former butler James has managed the archive.
