When a concrete structure needs rapid, durable repair, avoiding lengthy downtime and ensuring structural integrity is the priority. Mapegrout Fast-Set Rapido is engineered for exactly this challenge, providing a quick and robust solution for deteriorated concrete surfaces. It restores strength and finish, allowing projects to move forward with minimal delay.

Why this product exists

Mapegrout Fast-Set Rapido was formulated to deliver a high-performance, rapid-acting solution for structural concrete repair. It addresses damage caused by factors like reinforcing rod oxidation, freeze-thaw cycles, or general wear. This pre-blended mortar combines special hydraulic binders, selected aggregates, and synthetic fibres to create a shrinkage-compensated mix. This design ensures that repairs are not only fast but also durable, maintaining structural stability and allowing for a quick return to service for critical concrete elements.

The numbers that matter

  • Setting time less than 30 minutes, with a 10-minute pot life: This fast set enables rapid progress on site, reducing wait times between stages. It means multiple layers can be built up quickly when repairing deeper sections, as subsequent layers can be applied in as little as 15 minutes.
  • Ready for use in 2 to 3 hours: This rapid readiness allows light traffic on repaired industrial floors shortly after application. It minimises operational downtime and speeds up project timelines significantly, especially in active environments.
  • Compressive strength > 40 MPa at 28 days and bond strength > 1.5 MPa: Achieving over 40 MPa ensures the repaired concrete meets structural demands for load-bearing elements. The high bond strength prevents delamination, ensuring the patch integrates fully with the existing concrete, providing a cohesive and durable repair.
  • Fibre-reinforced and shrinkage-compensated: The synthetic fibres enhance the mortar's flexural strength and crack resistance. Paired with shrinkage compensation, this formulation minimises internal stresses that can lead to drying cracks, significantly extending the life and integrity of the repair.

What it's like to use

Mapegrout Fast-Set Rapido is mixed with clean water using an electric mixer until smooth and lump-free. Given its rapid setting, prepare only enough product to use within its 10-minute pot life. The mortar has excellent thixotropic properties, allowing for easy trowel application up to 20-25 mm thick on vertical surfaces without slump. For deeper repairs, apply in layers, waiting approximately 15 minutes between coats.

Substrate preparation is critical: remove all deteriorated concrete and clean reinforcing rods thoroughly. Protect rebar with Mapefer or Mapefer 1K before applying the mortar. Wet the substrate to a saturated surface dry (SSD) condition; a bonding slurry made from Mapegrout Fast-Set and water is recommended for enhanced adhesion, especially on absorbent surfaces. After application, keep repaired areas damp for at least 24 hours to ensure proper cure. Light traffic is possible after approximately 3 hours, and it can be painted with products from the Elastocolor range after 3 days.

Where this product excels

  • Restoring deteriorated concrete structures: For repairing columns, beams, balconies, and other structural elements where concrete has degraded due to age or rebar oxidation, particularly when speed is a critical factor.
  • Rapid repair of industrial concrete flooring: Ideal for patching damaged areas in high-traffic industrial environments, allowing surfaces to return to service quickly and minimising operational disruption.
  • Sealing surface cracks and smoothing defects: Effectively seals surface cracks in concrete and cement renders, and smooths out surface imperfections like aggregate bridging, shrinkage joints, or formwork spacer holes in new concrete pours.
  • Repairing concrete pipes and brick pointing: Suitable for mending damaged edges of concrete pipes and for pointing between bricks on structures intended for waterproofing with products like Planiseal 88.

How it fits in a real system

Mapegrout Fast-Set Rapido often serves as the core repair material in a comprehensive concrete restoration system. For structural repairs involving exposed rebar, it is applied directly over steel protected by a passivating agent such as Mapefer or Mapefer 1K. This sequence ensures long-term corrosion protection of the steel within the repair. In waterproofing applications, it can be used for pointing between bricks or pre-filling voids before the application of a waterproofing membrane like Planiseal 88, providing a solid, stable base for the subsequent waterproofing layer.

Choose this when

  • When a concrete structure requires rapid, high-strength repair to minimise downtime.
  • For restoring deteriorated concrete elements such as pillars, beams, and balconies, especially where rebar oxidation has occurred.
  • To quickly patch and repair industrial concrete flooring subject to heavy loads and traffic.
  • When smoothing surface defects or sealing cracks in concrete where shrinkage compensation and fibre reinforcement are crucial for durability.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Precision anchoring applications; for this, use Mapefill or Mapefill R.
  • Not for: Application with plaster sprayers; Mapegrout Thixotropic is designed for this purpose.
  • Not for: Temperatures consistently below +5°C during application and curing.
  • Not for: Use as a final facade finish if colour consistency is critical, as it may change colour after hardening.
  • Not for: Dry or dirty substrates, as proper preparation, cleaning, and wetting are essential for adhesion.

Mapegrout Fast-Set Rapido meets the rigorous requirements of EN 1504-9 for the protection and repair of concrete structures. It also fulfils the minimum requirements of EN 1504-3 for structural mortars of class R3. This classification confirms its suitability for structural repairs where high compressive strength, bond strength, and durability are mandated for the long-term integrity of the concrete structure.
