This historic Hungarian stamp shows the Holy Crown of St. Stephen, symbol of the Kingdom of Hungary. Originally issued around 1939–1940 as part of the “Holy Crown” definitive series, it was later overprinted in red with “DÉLVIDÉK VISSZATÉRT”, meaning “The Southern Territories Have Returned”.
The overprint commemorates Hungary’s reoccupation of southern regions (then part of Yugoslavia) in 1941 during World War II. These provisional issues were made quickly and used locally, making them prized items for collectors of WWII-era occupations and overprints.
