PMMA Eye Sphere

When the eye is severely damaged due to trauma, infection, or advanced disease, surgical removal may be required to restore comfort and prevent further complications. The two primary procedures are:

• Evisceration – removal of the internal contents of the eye while preserving the scleral shell
• Enucleation – complete removal of the eye globe

Following either procedure, an ocular implant is placed to restore natural orbital volume and maintain proper anatomical contour.

Role of PMMA Eye Spheres

PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate) Eye Spheres are permanent orbital implants designed to occupy the cavity created after evisceration or enucleation. PMMA is a long‑established, biocompatible material known for its durability, stability, and smooth surface finish.

Conformers vs. Eye Spheres

• Eye Spheres (PMMA or Silicone)
  Permanent implants placed during surgery to maintain orbital structure.

• Conformers
  Temporary devices inserted immediately after surgery to maintain the shape of the conjunctival sac, prevent tissue contraction, and protect the healing site.
  Once healing is complete, the conformer is replaced with a custom ocular prosthesis.
