A great example of aromatic, well-aged Rum from Martinique.
 
The Trois Rivieres estate was founded by Nicolas Fourquet in 1660. It was named after the three rivers that pass by the original sugarcane plantation — Bois d'Inde, Oman, and St. Pierre. It’s location in the far southern lowlands is important. The land there is rich, clay soils that occasionally has incursions of brackish seawater. This helps the cane develop even more sweetness and an earthy character. Their core range consists of six premium Agricole Rums in the traditional French style.
 
As with Trois Rivieres Rums, their VSOP is made exclusively from fresh pressed sugarcane juice and local yeasts. In this case, the VSOP designation indicates that the Rums in the bottle have been aged a minimum of five years in oak. it’s a fine example of Martinique Rum-making that — quite impressively — took home the top Rum Trophy and the 2018 International Wine & Spirit Competition.

The Rums of Martinique are special. In 1996, the island was awarded an “appellation d’origine contrôlée” — an exclusive designation of production region usually awarded to fine cheese and wine regions in France.
