Linn Radikal Klimax Power Supply

The Klimax Radikal is Linn's reference motor controller and power supply for the LP12. It uses the same DC motor and digital speed management technology as the Standard Radikal, but the power supply behind it is a fundamentally different proposition — a bespoke Utopik supply, housed in a massive machined aluminium chassis that weighs close to 14 kg, with fully independent dedicated output rails for motor control and phono stage power.

The Klimax Radikal is specified as standard on the Klimax LP12. For owners of high-specification LP12 builds seeking the final word in speed stability and electrical cleanliness, it is the correct choice.

The Utopik Power Supply

The critical difference between the Klimax and Standard Radikal is not the motor control circuit itself — it is the quality of the power delivery that feeds it. The Klimax Radikal uses a bespoke Utopik power supply with entirely separate, dedicated voltage rails: one for the motor control system, one for the Urika internal phono stage. These rails are fully independent — they do not share a transformer or rectification stage.

The practical effect is a dramatic reduction in power supply noise reaching both the motor control circuit and the phono stage. The motor runs on a cleaner supply, which means its speed management operates with greater precision. The Urika draws from a supply that is completely isolated from any motor-related electrical noise.

The chassis itself contributes. At nearly 14 kg, machined from three pieces of solid aluminium with high-mass stainless steel feet, the Klimax Radikal is mechanically inert — there is no resonance from the housing to couple into the listening environment.

Auto-Calibration

The Klimax Radikal automatically recalibrates its speed management on every power-up, compensating for changes in bearing friction and ambient temperature. This is more than the Standard Radikal does — the calibration procedure adapts to the actual physical state of the deck on that day, in that room.

Speed Management

Both 33⅓ and 45 rpm are supported with electronic switching. The speed management system checks and corrects platter speed on every rotation, maintaining a consistency of pitch and timing that transforms the LP12's musical character. Instruments stay in tune, rhythmic patterns hold together, and the music sounds like a coherent performance rather than a reconstruction.

Klimax Radikal vs Standard Radikal

The Standard Radikal is the upgrade that matters most — the jump from Lingo to any Radikal is transformative. The Klimax Radikal is the next step: a more refined power supply, auto-calibration, and a fully isolated, independent Urika supply. For Klimax-level LP12 builds, the Klimax Radikal is correct and its contribution is audible. For Selekt-level builds, the Standard Radikal is the right choice and the cost difference is better spent on other components.
