History:
One of 30 ‘Merchant Navy’ Class ‘Pacifics’ built at the SR’s Eastleigh Works between 1941 and 1949, ‘French Line CTG’ emerged in June 1945 in malachite green livery as No. 21C19. The class was given names of merchant shipping companies associated with Southampton Docks, of which CTG – Compagnie Générale Transatlantique – was one, though it was widely known simply as ‘French Line’.
The locomotive became BR No. 35019 in 1948 and was fitted with the new style wedge-shape cab and turned out in express passenger blue. It was rebuilt in May 1959, this time in BR lined green livery, which it wore until withdrawal from Weymouth shed in September 1965.
