The fashion designer behind the Albert Nipon label was Pearl Nipon. She got her start in fashion without her husband, the namesake of the acclaimed black-on-white "Albert Nipon" label. Initially designing maternity clothes sale of which dipped in the 60s, she made a comeback at Saks Fifth Avenue as buyers were interested in the style of her pieces, made with high-end fabric and known for elegant collars and bows. Albert Nipon Inc. exploded in popularity, becoming one of the preeminent labels of the 1970s and '80s and establishing the couple as industry celebrities. Mary Tyler Moore, Barbara Walters, Rosalynn Carter and other women of note frequently donned Mrs. Nipon's designs. The fashion design empire counted Nancy Reagan and Barbra Streisand as customers.
