Emma Goldman was an anarchist famous for her activism, speeches & political writings. She was pivotal in the development of anarchist political philosophy in North America & Europe in the first half of the 20th century. She was a Lithuanian immigrant who had emigrated to the US in 1885, settling in New York. She later became involved in the anarchist movement in 1889, writing & lecturing on anarchism, women’s’ rights & social issues. Her lifelong friend & fellow-anarchist Alexander Berkman aided her in a plot to kill industrialist/financier Henry Frick. This went wrong, earning Berkman a lengthy prison-term. Goldman herself was to experience several jail-terms in the subsequent years, for various crimes such as incitement to riot.
She was greatly admired & lionized for her free-thinking stance, & also denounced for her advocacy of violent revolution. Her iconic status in the anarchist movement was revived in the 1970s.
