This garment in itself encapsulates the whole of Undercover’s artistic vision of the early 2000s. The incredibly complex construction of the cardigan makes it structured yet delicate. It is composed of 35 unique hand sewn patches of various origins which sit atop of segmented ribbed knit cabling and sheer linen garb. Many of the hand sewn patches use over-long finishing threads that span the entirety of the garment, leaving these threads to drag far below the cardigan in dramatic fashion. The colours used for the knit, stitching, and panelling all correspond closely to the widely recognised “Scab” palette, featuring predominantly sombre and dark blacks, greys, and earth tones.
Pieces from the 2003 collection are often coveted for their small ornamental details which include bells, zippers & chains, all meant to be mixed and combined with consistent thematic style. These pieces range from full crust punk pants, dress ensembles to made-to-order boots. On an individual level, these garments are a perfect case-study on construction and craftsmanship, each item typically employing dozens of stitching and layering techniques.
