Description:

Kodaly and Dvorak German-French cellist Nicolas Altstedt of Lockenhaus, who can be heard for their intense dynamism, high tension, and songfulness, are gifted players of both period and modern instruments. He has performed with Il Giardino armonico under Giovanni Antonini and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Gustavo Dudamel, and was invited by the composer to be the soloist in the premiere of Salonen's new cello concerto. In addition, as the music director and conductor of the Haydn Orchestra in Vienna, he has been playing vividly with period style... He has been the most active and borderless conductor of the Haydn Orchestra in Vienna since 2012. This album is the follow-up to the Bartók and Veresh works, which won the Gramophone Award for Chamber Music in 2020, and is a project between ALPHA and the Lockenhaus Music Festival, where he has been music director since 2012. The duo with festival regular Barnabás Kelemen in the Kodály is a treat to listen to, with a gurgling, instrumental intensity from the beginning, but the tension that pervades the entire work and the empathy that Kelemen has for the great composer of his native country is especially pleasant and rewarding.Dvorak, again joined by Alexander Ronkwig, a familiar face at the festival, gives a wonderful performance of the songfulness of the Slavic melody and the vibrancy of the rhythms. This "Dumky" also includes an interesting extra at the end, the first draft of the third movement (unfinished). Naxos Japan
