Description:
Bayreuth Festival 2013 - Thielemann's stunning "The Dutchman" is one of Wagner's most famous operas, written in a relatively accessible manner in his early years and performed in a reasonable length. The story of salvation through pure love has been a major theme in Wagner's later operas, and in many ways it is a perfect introduction to Wagner. Samuel Yon, as the Dutchman, has a clear voice and plays the role well, responding to Zenta's anxieties as accurately expressed by Melvate. Dahlan, sung by Zoellich, gives the work strength, and Bruns sings with fervor, expressing the helmsman's fiery personality. Thielemann's conducting succeeds in coaxing overwhelming music out of the orchestra, full of natural, dynamic pulse and crystal clear sound. (The New York Times) Naxos Japan
