Description:
While continuing the "Czech musical tradition" established by Smetana, Dvořák, and Janáček, the composer Martineau left many works in a wide range of genres, incorporating influences from the French sextet and Stravinsky. Six symphonies remain, the first through the fifth being composed consistently one each year from 1942 to 1946, but the sixth is the only one with a seven-year gap in composition dates, and its content is quite different. The "No. 1" is an orthodox symphony with neat brush strokes, the "No. 2" has a chamber music-like sound, the "No. 3" is a sorrowful work reflecting the worsening war situation, the "No. 4" expresses joy at the end of the war, the "No. 5" includes quotes from Tchaikovsky, and the "No. 6" is named the "Symphonic Fantasy" by the composer, and is depicted with a wide variety of expressions. The "No. 4" is a joyful conclusion to the war, the "No. 5" quotes Tchaikovsky, and the "No. 6," which he himself called a "symphonic fantasy. Naxos Japan
