Aquamarine and diamond ring, first half 20th century. Aquamarine is a pale blue variety of the mineral beryl. Its colour has given its an historic association with water, and sailors considered it a lucky talisman at sea, ensuring calm waters on their voyages. This aquamarine has been cut en cabochon to show off a dreamy, wave-like pattern of microscopic crystal inclusions, which catch the light like water droplets, and on an even smaller level, row after row of needle-like inclusions which follow the growth of the crystal, characteristic for aquamarine, and poetically known as ‘rain’. Coolly glittering millegrain-bordered shoulders and single-cut diamonds are the perfect setting for this evocative stone.
