This commemorative stamp from Austria was issued in 1985 to mark the 400th anniversary (1585–1985) of the Karl-Franzens University of Graz, one of the country’s oldest and most distinguished institutions of higher learning. The design features the university’s golden seal, displaying the lion and sun motifs surrounded by the Latin inscription “Alma Universitas Graecensis Carolae Franciscae”. The background is a deep academic green, symbolizing scholarship, with the denomination 3.50 schilling shown in white.
Designed by A. Rossi and K. Leitgeb, this issue honors four centuries of Austrian academic tradition and intellectual heritage.
