Notes

John Bayley’s History and Antiquities of the Tower of London, published in 1825, is a comprehensive account of one of England’s most iconic landmarks. The book delves into the architectural evolution, historical events, and notable figures associated with the Tower of London, from its Norman origins under William the Conqueror to its use as a royal residence, fortress, and infamous prison. Bayley, an antiquarian and record-keeper, drew on historical documents and firsthand research to present a detailed narrative.

This work explores the Tower’s role in key events, including its use during the Wars of the Roses, Tudor intrigues, and as a repository for the Crown Jewels. Bayley also recounts tales of notable prisoners, such as Anne Boleyn, Lady Jane Grey, and Sir Walter Raleigh, bringing their stories to life. Richly detailed and accompanied by illustrations, the book is a valuable resource for those interested in English history and the enduring legacy of the Tower of London. This set includes memoirs of royal and distinguished persons, deduced from records, state-papers, and manuscripts, and from other original and authentic sources. 2 volumes. [1825].
