Description:
The three pieces on this album are No. 136 for the Eighth Sunday after Trinity, No. 59 for the First Sunday after Pentecost, and No. 51 for the Fifteenth Sunday after Trinity and all occasions. No. 136, which opens with a gorgeous chorus despite its theme of atonement for sin, is a short but well-rounded work. The duet between bass and tenor in the fifth piece is a highlight. The small cantata No. 59 Catastrophe has been mostly converted to other works. It is a small work that closes with a simple chorale. No. 51 is a masterpiece that is often heard. The soprano plays a major role in this work, but it is believed that a male soprano probably sang the solo, since women were forbidden to sing in churches at that time. The soloist is Sibylla Rubens. She sang the difficult part with clear and limpid singing. (C)RS
